Housed in the former Camden Town Hall Annex in London’s thriving King’s Cross neighbourhood, the 1974 Brutalist building has been meticulously restored and is The Standard’s first hotel outside America. The property is just across the street from St Pancras International and Underground stations.

All 266 rooms, from snug Cosy Cores to terraced suites with outside bathtubs, are uniquely decorated, featuring en-suite facilities, flat-screen TVs, Bang & Olufsen speakers, Italian bedding and complimentary toiletries.
The Standard, London also features an eclectic in-house library lounge and bar, as well as its’ cultural hub; the Sound Studio, which hosts regular DJs, live music events and talks.

Double Standard, The Standard, London’s bar and terrace, serves delicious hearty fare accompanied by beers, classic cocktails and offers a bottomless brunch on a Sunday, whilst next door in Isla, all-day dining from breakfast until late is available.

The exterior red lift takes guests directly to the 10th-floor where Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias’ restaurant Decimo showcases live fire cooking and the building’s 360-degree views of London. Expensive and worth it.
I must start by saying that, having booked a Junior Suite, I found myself upgraded to a Junior Suite with Terrace. I think that I might have struggled with the Junior Suite as originally booked. Despite the obvious comfort, I do not cope well with rooms that do not have opening windows. The terrace obviously changed all that; and that is what I review here. The room was spacious and extremely comfortable, with magnificent views south across the city and beyond. If I’m paying the sort of room rates that I was here, then I expect things to be right; and they were. I’m not sure that there’s much point in going into details. The room, staff and surroundings were everything that I would have expected under the circumstances. Breakfast was magnificent – though see below. Except to add that I reported a flickering light in the bathroom, and this was attended to forthwith. This is in marked contrast to a similarly priced hotel nearby where I stayed a year ago. I reported a missing bedside light – twice; it was not replaced, and my complaint at this failure was responded to in a singularly mealy-mouthed fashion. You will note also my criticism below. Whilst I stand by the criticism, I must also add that, when, a little while later, I addressed reception staff on the subject, they organised a more or less immediate and no quibbles partial refund.
I should have liked to eat breakfast in the breakfast room. I arrived there, however, to find that there was no getting away from the piped music which pervades more or less every inch of the public areas of the hotel. I do not like music over any meal, least of all breakfast; and I think that the Standard could really consider setting aside a quiet area for those guests – more numerous, I suspect, than you might realise – who want peace and quiet. In consequence I decided to order breakfast in the bedroom via room service. The problem with ordering like this is that there is little opportunity to discuss anything with staff – quantities, small variations etc. What arrived was absolutely first rate, but far more than I either needed or wanted. As I have said above, I was deeply impressed by the way in which my complaint about this was dealt with. And I still think that the hotel could give some thought to their policies on noise/sound/music around the building in general.

Comfy perfect stay
The hotel is perfect, it’s in a great location just opposite King’s Cross station. The staff were really friendly, our room had great view of London and was really comfy
